IEC 60068-2-31 Environmental Tests - Part 2-31: Tests - Test Ec: Hard Handling Shocks Mainly for Equipment Type Samples

The IEC 60068-2-31 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defines a test method for simulating the effects of rough handling shocks, impacts, jolts, and drops that can be received during repair work or in operational use.

IEC 60068-2-31 Environmental Tests - Part 2-31: Tests - Test Ec: Hard Handling Shocks Mainly for Equipment Type Samples

This standard does not simulate the effects of impacts received as a loosely constrained load during transport. Where the effects of loose cargo transport are to be evaluated, the Test Ee: Splash test method is recommended.

Likewise, the test method in this standard does not simulate the effects of shock applied to installed equipment. Where this effect is to be evaluated, the Test Ee: Shock test method is recommended.

Test Ec method, such as those with small to medium size and mass,

  • Only for equipment likely to undergo such rough handling, and
  • It is only applied to faces and corners where there is a risk of encountering such an operation.

In general, equipment that is frequently used and maintained, such as field equipment and unit spares, is considered at risk. Equipment that forms an integral part of a permanent installation is generally not considered at risk and is not tested.

This test method does not apply to fragile unprotected equipment of irregular shape that will be contained within a bearing frame or jig when removed from installation. For equipment that stands on only one face, the test is usually performed on that face only. Shock tests are performed on the sample when it is fixed to the test machine. When the sample is free, drop and overturn, free fall, repeated free fall and jump tests are performed.

The latest update to the IEC 60068-2-31 standard also includes the IEC 60068-2-32 standard.

The following three test methods are defined in the IEC 60068-2-31 standard:

  • Reduction
  • Free fall - Procedure 1
  • Free fall - Procedure 2

Our organization, among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations it provides for businesses in various sectors, also offers environmental testing services under the IEC 60068-2-31 standard, specifically Test EC: Primarily testing equipment-type samples for severe handling shocks, thanks to its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
