The ISO 16000-3 standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) defines a test method for detecting formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) in air (active sampling method). This test method is specific to formaldehyde, but with modification, at least 12 other aromatic as well as saturated and unsaturated aliphatic carbonyl compounds are detected by this method.

This test method is suitable for the determination of formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds in the concentration range of about 1 µg/m3 to 1 mg/m3. The sampling method yields a time-weighted average sample. It can be used for long-term (1 hour to 24 hours) or short-term (5 minutes to 60 minutes) air sampling for formaldehyde.
The ISO 16000-3 standard provides a sampling and analysis procedure for formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds that includes collection from air into adsorbent cartridges coated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine followed by analysis of hydrazones generated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with detection by ultraviolet absorption. .
The standard also applies to the determination of compounds such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, benzaldehyde, butyraldehyde, valeraldehyde, 2,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde, capronaldehyde, isovaleraldehyde, propionaldehyde, o-tolualdehyde, m-tolualdehyde and p-tolualdehyde.
The active sampling procedure described here is based on the US EPA method TO-11A. Meanwhile, formaldehyde and some other carbonyl compounds have a high toxic potential.
In addition, persons using this test method should be familiar with normal laboratory practices. This standard does not purport to address all, if any, use-related security issues. It is the responsibility of the testers to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to ensure compliance with any national regulatory requirements.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, aims to determine formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds in indoor air and test room air within the scope of ISO 16000-3 standard. It also provides active sampling method testing services.
