High Cycle Fatigue Test
The high cycle fatigue test is a test method used to determine the finite life fatigue strength and high cycle fatigue strength for tensile, compression, bending and torsional loads.

Especially when it comes to components, high-cycle fatigue testing is applied to identify weak spots that can later be remedied through structure or material changes. Low-speed fatigue strength is not considered in the high-speed fatigue test.
In high-cycle fatigue testing, the load amplitude and average load are kept constant during the single-stage fatigue test. Depending on the magnitude of the load amplitude, the sample can be applied at varying frequencies before it fails.
The main international standards considered in these tests are:
- ISO 1099 Metallic materials - Fatigue test - Axial force controlled method. This standard describes conditions for conducting axial, constant amplitude, force-controlled, fatigue tests at ambient temperature on metallic samples without intentionally applied stress concentrations. The purpose of this test is to provide fatigue information, such as the relationship between the applied stress and the number of cycles to failure for a given material condition, such as hardness and microstructure at various stress ratios.
- ASTM E466-15 Standard practice for performing force-controlled constant amplitude axial fatigue tests of metallic materials. This standard describes a test method for the performance of axial force-controlled fatigue tests to obtain the fatigue strength of metallic materials both at initial loading and in the fatigue regime where stresses are predominantly elastic throughout the test. This application is limited to fatigue testing of axial unnotched and notched specimens subjected to a constant amplitude, periodic stress in air at room temperature. This application is not intended for axial fatigue testing of components or parts.
- DIN 50100 Fatigue strength test - Application and evaluation of cyclic tests with constant load amplitude for metallic material samples and components. The load-controlled fatigue test method described in this standard involves the conduct and evaluation of cyclic tests at constant load amplitudes on metallic samples and components.
