Fluoride Determination (SM 4500-FB Method)

Fluoride Determination (SM 4500-FB Method)

Within the scope of the National Environmental Methods Index (NEMI), which creates a database containing environmental methods, protocols, statistical and analytical methods and procedures and develops standard methods, the SM 4500-FB method, which includes a test method for fluoride determination, has been developed.

Fluoride Determination (SM 4500-FB Method)

Fluoride can be separated from other non-volatile components in water by conversion to hydrofluoric acid followed by distillation. This conversion is accomplished using a strong, high-boiling acid. Quantitative fluoride recovery is approximated using a relatively large sample.

Distillation separates fluoride from most water samples. Distillation produces a volume of distillate equal to the volume of the original water sample. In this way, it is not necessary to use a dilution factor when expressing analytical results. If distillation is carried out properly, substances that interfere with fluoride detection are already excluded. The only common volatile component likely to interfere with the colorimetric analysis of the resulting distillate is chloride. When the chloride concentration is high enough to interfere, silver sulfate should be added to the sulfuric acid distillation mixture to minimize evaporation of hydrogen chloride.

In the tests and analyzes carried out in our institution, which has a wide range of technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and applies the most modern methods, national and international standards and legal regulations in force are complied with. Among the numerous tests performed in this context, there are also fluoride determination (SM 4500-FB method) services.
