Within the scope of the National Index of Environmental Methods (NEMI), method SM 5520 B, which includes a test method for the determination of oils and greases, has been developed. In the determination of oils and greases, the absolute amount of a particular substance is not measured. Rather, groups of substances with similar physical properties are quantitatively determined based on their common solubility in an organic extraction solvent.

Under this method, oil and grease are defined as any material that is recovered as a solvent-soluble substance. Contains other materials extracted from a solvent-acidified sample (such as sulfur compounds, certain organic dyes, and chlorophyll) that are not volatile during testing.
In recent updates of the SM 5520 B method, petroleum ether is used as a solvent for natural and treated waters, and n-hexane for polluted waters. Trichlorotrifluoroethane was also added as an optional solvent for all sample types.
The methods presented here are suitable for biological lipids and mineral hydrocarbons. Sample complexity results in low or high results due to lack of analytical specificity. However, most of them are applied for industrial wastewater or treated wastewater containing these materials.
In the tests and analyzes carried out in our organization, which has a wide range of technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and applies the most modern methods, national and international standards and legal regulations in force are complied with. Oil and grease determination (SM 5520 B method) services are among the numerous tests performed in this context.
