Within the framework of the National Index of Environmental Methods (NEMI), which creates a database containing environmental methods, protocols, statistical and analytical methods and procedures and develops standard methods, the SM 4500-PB method, which includes a test method for total phosphorus determination, has been developed. Phosphorus analyses essentially involve two general procedural steps:

The separation of phosphorus into its various forms is defined analytically, but analytical differentiations have been chosen so that they can be used for interpretation purposes.
Because phosphorus can form in combination with organic matter, a digestion method for determining total phosphorus must be able to oxidize organic matter effectively to release phosphorus as orthophosphate. Three digestion methods are given in the method described in SM 4500-P B. The most rigorous and time consuming method, the perchloric acid method is only recommended for particularly difficult samples such as sediments. The nitric acid-sulfuric acid method is recommended for most samples. By far the simplest method is the persulfate oxidation technique.
Briefly, the determination of total phosphorus in an aqueous sample is based on digestion of the sample to convert the phosphorus compounds to orthophosphate, which is then determined by spectrophotometry.
In the tests and analyzes carried out in our institution, which has a wide range of technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and applies the most modern methods, national and international standards and legal regulations in force are complied with. Total phosphorus determination (SM 4500-PB method) services are among the numerous tests performed in this context.
