Determination of Free Chlorine (SM 4500-Cl G Method)

Determination of Free Chlorine (SM 4500-Cl G Method)

Within the scope of the National Environmental Methods Index (NEMI), the SM 4500-Cl G method, which includes a test method for the determination of free chlorine, has been developed.

Determination of Free Chlorine (SM 4500-Cl G Method)

The minimum bactericidal chlorine concentration under certain conditions such as pH, temperature, contact time depends on the type of chlorine residue present. In fact, available methods for the determination of free chlorine alone are more dependent on laboratory capabilities than on field conditions.

The presence of free chlorine in drinking water depends on two conditions:

  • Adding a sufficient amount of chlorine to the water initially to neutralize bacteria and some viruses
  • Protection of water against re-contamination during storage

The presence of free chlorine in drinking water is associated with the absence of disease-causing organisms and is a measure of the drinkability of the water.

There are six methods in the standard for the determination of chloride. Among these, the 4500-Cl G method includes flow injection analysis, an automated colorimetric technique and is useful for analyzing large numbers of samples. Preferably, it is a correct choice to determine the chloride by ion chromatography. Chloride can also be determined by capillary ion electrophoresis. The 4500-Cl C and G methods are methods in which mercury, which is a highly toxic reagent, is used.

In the tests and analyzes carried out in our organization, which has a wide range of technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and applies the most modern methods, national and international standards and legal regulations in force are complied with. Free chlorine determination (SM 4500-Cl G method) services are among the numerous tests performed in this context.
