The chemical compound, known as NNK for short, is the methylnitrosamino-pyridyl-butanone compound. Methylnitrosamino (NNK) is a compound formed after entering the body. This compound belongs to a group of chemicals called tobacco-specific n-nitrosamines. This chemical group is only found in tobacco and tobacco products. Smokers, non-smokers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, and people who use smokeless tobacco products, such as chewing tobacco or snuff, are exposed to the compound methylnitrosamino. In short, it enters people's bodies when they smoke or use smokeless tobacco products, or when they are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. Workers who harvest tobacco and manufacture tobacco products are also exposed to the methylnitrosamino compound through their skin and lungs.

The compound methylnitrosamino-pyridyl-butanone (NNK) causes cancer in humans. In pregnant women exposed to tobacco smoke or using tobacco products, NNK passes through the placenta to the developing fetus. Studies have found this compound in the urine of more than a third of tested nonsmokers. Again, methylnitrosamino levels in the urine of children are 2 to 3 times higher than the levels found in adults.
NNK, the tobacco-specific nitrosamine, is a potent carcinogen found in tobacco smoke and plays a role in the development of lung cancer. The compound methylnitrosamino-pyridyl-butanone (NNK), also known as nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone, is a potent carcinogen and biomarker of cigarette smoke exposure. NNK, obtained by curing tobacco, is found in many tobacco products.
Nitrosamines are carcinogens formed during the fermentation of various foods and tobacco, and under acidic conditions present in the food system from consumption to elimination, as a result of the in vivo reaction of nitrite preservatives with amines. The compounds can be formed via a nitrosation reaction between amines and nitrous acid. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified seven nitrosamine impurities theoretically present in pharmaceutical products. Some of these have been detected in pharmaceutical materials. Nitrosamine impurities occur at microgram levels. Therefore, sensitive analytical methods are applied to identify nitrosamines.
Our organization also provides NNK (methylnitrosamino) analysis services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
