Clostridium Perfringens Count

Clostridium Perfringens Count

Clostridium Perfringens is an anaerobic, gram-positive, spore-forming rod-shaped bacterium. It is referred to as 'Sulphate reducing Clostridium' in the food industry. Clin. Perfingens has the ability to ferment many carbohydrates while at the same time reducing nitrate and causing gaseous fermentation in milk.

Clostridium Perfringens Count

Clin. Perfingens causes a disease called perfingence food poisoning. Perfingens food poisoning other S. Aureus and Cl. It differs from botulinum because of the toxin it secretes. This disease loses its effect in a short time without the need for doctor's intervention. For this reason, it has been called with names such as poisoning, foodborne illness, infection type food poisoning.

Perfingens poisoning can occur due to reasons such as inadequate cooking, inadequate cooling or reheating in places such as workplaces, schools, hospitals, dormitories, prisons where meals are prepared for large numbers of people.

Clin. Since perfingens is very common in nature, sanitation must be fully determined to prevent contamination. Apart from that, the easiest method is to consume the food after cooking it without waiting too long.

The counting of Sulphite-reducing anaerobes in foodstuffs is generally done by the Most Probable Number (EMS) method if the number of bacteria is too low to be counted by colony formation. After planting on suitable media from the dilutions prepared by EMS method, the reproduction results are checked and the number is calculated. The most commonly used medium is TSC Agar medium. Bulk or spreading count method can be used according to the expected number. The formation of black color indicates the presence of sulfide-reducing Clostridiums.
