In general, benzalkonium chlorides are a group of quaternary ammonium compounds. It was first used as an effective disinfectant and antiseptic in the 1935s. It was later registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is used in a variety of products to date. Its applications range from domestic to agriculture, various sectors and medical fields.
Domestic applications are mostly personal hygiene and cosmetic products such as fabric softeners, shampoos, conditioners and body lotions, and nasal medications. It is also among the most common active ingredients in disinfectants used in residential, industrial, agricultural and clinical settings.
Other common uses include walls, floors and interior and exterior surfaces of toilets, agricultural vehicles, humidifiers, water storage tanks, products used in residential and commercial pools, decorative pools and fountains, water lines and systems, pulp and paper products.
