ISO 11290-1 Microbiology of the Food Chain - Horizontal Method for Detection and Enumeration of Listeria Monocytogenes and Listeria Spp. - Part 1: Method of Detection

ISO 11290-1 Microbiology of the Food Chain - Horizontal Method for Detection and Enumeration of Listeria Monocytogenes and Listeria Spp. - Part 1: Method of Detection

In the ISO 11290-1 standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), a horizontal method is defined for the following purposes:

ISO 11290-1 Microbiology of the Food Chain - Horizontal Method for Detection and Enumeration of Listeria Monocytogenes and Listeria Spp. - Part 1: Method of Detection

  • Detection of Listeria monocytogenes
  • Detection of Listeria spp. (including Listeria monocytogenes)

This standard applies to:

  • Products for human consumption and animal nutrition
  • Environmental examples in food production and food processing

For the purposes of this standard,

  • Listeria monocytogenes refers to microorganisms that form typical colonies on solid selective media and display the defined morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics when tests are performed according to this standard.
  • Detection of Listeria monocytogenes refers to the inability to detect Listeria monocytogenes in a particular product mass or volume or on a particular surface when tests are performed in accordance with this standard.
  • Listeria spp. refers to microorganisms that form typical colonies on solid selective media and exhibit the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics defined when tests are performed according to this document.
  • Listeria spp. detection refers to determining whether Listeria spp. has been detected in a particular product mass or volume or on a particular surface when the tests are carried out in accordance with this document.

Due to the wide variety of food and feed products, this horizontal method is an option where different or specific methods must be used. for some products, it is not considered suitable in every detail. However, in any case, this horizontal method is intended to be applied as far as possible, and deviations from it can only be made for justified technical reasons.

If there are international standards or national standards that are not compatible with this horizontal method for certain product groups, when such standards are reviewed, they are modified to comply with the ISO 11290-1 standard. Thus, in the end, the only remaining deviations from this horizontal method are those necessary for well-known technical reasons.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the scope of ISO 11290-1 standard, microbiology of the food chain, detection and evaluation of listeria monocytogenes and listeria spp. It also provides testing services in accordance with the detection method, which is the horizontal method for counting.
