Pressure Loss Tests

Pressure drop or pressure drop is the total pressure difference between two points in a fluid-carrying network. Pressure drop or pressure loss occurs when a liquid material enters at one end of a piping system and leaves the other.

Pressure Loss Tests

Process piping systems are subject to a phenomenon known as pressure drop. Pressure drop is caused by fluids rubbing against pipe components and the inner walls of a piping system. It is calculated for a given system with engineering models that use properties such as fluid type, flow rate, piping layout and pipe diameter, system component properties such as pumps, and more.

Pressure loss is not necessarily bad on its own. Understanding how to calculate this in a particular pipeline allows a system to be properly designed and variables such as pipe diameter, pump specifications, and types of valves to be used can be determined. However, pressure loss can have negative consequences if not well understood for a particular installation.

If there is excessive pressure loss in a system, working fluid temperatures rise and the system pumps have to work harder due to increased energy consumption. Pressure drops can also increase the overall pressure of the system, increase wear on components and introduce potentially dangerous overpressure conditions. In addition, excessive pressure loss can render some piping system components inoperable due to insufficient working pressures.

Understanding the pressure drop in general allows determining the size of the pumps and motors in the system and the process pipe diameter required to move a particular product type in a pipeline. The higher the pressure drop in the line, the higher the amount of energy consumed to maintain the desired process flow, requiring a higher powered motor. Conversely, the lower the pressure drop in a piping system, the less energy is consumed, giving the potential to use a lower powered motor. The pressure drop also determines the overall system pressure height requirements.
