UN recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods include recommended tests to minimize hazards during transport by air, land or ship. Section 38.3 specifically addresses shipping test requirements for rechargeable and non-rechargeable lithium batteries and battery packs.

This series of tests is commonly known as the T1-T8 test, referring to the eight component tests of the regimen, and includes the following tests:
Lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods and can pose a safety risk if they are not tested and packaged in accordance with shipping regulations. Section 38.3 tests help ensure the safety of lithium-ion or lithium metal batteries during shipping.
The transport of lithium batteries is subject to national and international regulations. Section 38.3 provides detailed information on environmental, mechanical and electrical requirements for all lithium cells and batteries. Companies producing lithium batteries and products using lithium batteries must comply with their design, manufacture and distribution.
Briefly, the T8 Forced discharge test simulates a forced discharge condition for primary and secondary batteries only.
The T8 (forced discharge) test initiates a fully discharged battery and, through the use of an external power source, forces the battery to over-discharge, potentially reversing it. This means that the voltage drops below zero volts and becomes negative. In other words, the battery is damaged so that it no longer provides voltage, but instead acts as a resistor, causing a voltage drop. This causes the battery to heat up with the risk of fire or flame.
This test is a balance of the limits of battery design with appropriate discharge current specifications. If the current specification is too high, the resulting heating rate will stress the battery too much, causing excessive heat to result in thermal runaway, i.e. fire or explosion.
Our organization also provides T8 (forced discharge) test services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
