EN ISO 21809 Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries - External Coatings for Buried or Submerged Pipelines Used in Pipeline Transportation Systems
The standard “EN ISO 21809 Petroleum and natural gas industries - External coatings for buried or submerged pipelines used in pipeline transportation systems”, which is based on a European standard and published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), consists of a number of subsections published under the same title. Namely,

- The standard “EN ISO 21809-1 Part 1: Polyolefin coatings (3-layer PE and 3-layer PP)” describes the requirements for external three-layer polyethylene and polypropylene-based coatings applied by the plant in accordance with the ISO 13623 standard for the corrosion protection of welded and seamless steel pipes for pipeline transport systems in the oil and gas industries. Pipes coated in accordance with this standard are considered suitable for further protection through cathodic protection.
- The standard "EN ISO 21809-2 Part 2: Single-layer fusion-bonded epoxy coatings" describes the requirements for the qualification, application, testing and processing of materials for the plant application of externally applied single-layer fusion-bonded epoxy coatings for the corrosion protection of bare steel pipes used in pipeline transportation systems for the petroleum and natural gas industries. Pipes coated in accordance with this standard are considered suitable for additional protection by cathodic protection.
- The standard “EN ISO 21809-3 Part 3: Field joint coatings (Introduction of mesh-supported coating systems)” specifies the requirements for field joint coatings of seamless or welded steel pipes for buried and submerged sections of pipeline transport systems used in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. This standard specifies the qualification, application and testing of corrosion protection coatings applied to exposed steel surfaces after the pipes and fittings (components) have been joined by welding. The table given in the standard identifies different types of field joint coatings for pipelines. This standard does not address the requirements for additional mechanical protection, thermal insulation or joint fillings of pipes with concrete gravity coatings. Field joints of pipes and fittings coated in accordance with this standard are considered suitable for further protection by cathodic protection.
- The standard “EN ISO 21809-4 Part 4: Polyethylene coatings (2-layer PE)” describes the requirements for the qualification, application, inspection, testing, handling and storage of materials for the plant application of externally applied two-layer polyethylene coatings (13623-layer PE) for the corrosion protection of bare steel pipes in pipeline transportation systems for the oil and gas industries as defined in the ISO 2 standard. Pipes coated in accordance with this standard are considered suitable for additional protection by cathodic protection.
- The standard "EN ISO 21809-5 Part 5: External concrete coatings" describes the requirements for the qualification, application, testing and processing of materials required for the external application of reinforced concrete coatings to bare pipe or pre-coated pipe, as defined in ISO 13623, in pipeline transport systems for the oil and gas industries. The external application of concrete is primarily used for the negative buoyancy of pipes used in buried or submerged pipeline systems and for the mechanical protection of the pipe and its pre-coating. This standard is valid for concrete thicknesses of 25 mm or more.
- The standard “EN ISO 21809-11 Part 11: Coatings for in-field application, coating repair and rehabilitation” describes the criteria and requirements for the field application of coatings, coating repair and coating rehabilitation on buried pipelines. This standard includes:
- Coating evaluation (new and existing)
- Removal of deteriorated coatings
- Surface preparation
- Field or on-site application of external coatings
This standard is applicable to oil or natural gas pipelines, whether or not they have a cathodic protection system. The pipelines may be in operation during the extraction, preparation and application process.
This standard specifies coatings applied to all pipeline components including elbows, T's, fittings, valves and interfaces between different coatings in soil-to-air pipeline sections for qualification/testing by field contractors.
Technical and performance characteristics of repair and rehabilitation coating materials are given by reference to ISO 21809-3. Coating of field joints is outside the scope of this standard. Field joint coatings are covered in ISO 21809-3. This standard excludes the application of coatings when the pipeline is submerged (under water).
In general, a quality system and environmental management system must be implemented to ensure compliance with the requirements of the EN ISO 21809 standard.
Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in science and technology in the world and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also test services in accordance with the standard “EN ISO 21809 Petroleum and natural gas industries - External coatings for buried or underwater pipelines used in pipeline transportation systems”.
