Thermal Stability Tests

Process Safety and Chemical Safety Tests

Thermal Stability Tests

Crucial for safe material handling is a thorough understanding of safe handling and storage temperatures to avoid uncontrolled exothermic activity due to oxidation / burning or molecular decomposition.

Thermal Stability Tests

It is very important to choose the correct test method to determine maximum safe use temperatures. Usually companies blindly use Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) or Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) methods to establish thermal stability limits.

However, these leakproof test methods are insufficient to detect oxidation processes and greatly overestimate safe processing temperatures. Alternative test methods specific to powders or considering scale and air exposure are available and provide robust, conservative test data for all processing conditions.

Thermal Stability Tests EUROLAB advantage

  • Expert advice on choosing the appropriate test
  • Competent risk assessment
  • High safety standards for people and materials
  • Reliable thermal analysis

Our Approach

The thermal stability tests we offer cover two separate categories: materials that do not require oxygen for decomposition (chemical decomposition) and those for materials requiring oxygen (thermal oxidation):

Chemical Weathering

  • Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC)
  • Differential Thermal Analysis (Carius Tube)
  • Adiabatic calorimeter (using Acceleration Speed Calorimeter (ARC) or ADC II Calorimeter system)
  • CLP and UN test methods for the classification of self-reactive substances (UN Class 2, Division 4), including H.4 (Adiabatic Storage Test) and H.4.1 (Heat Deposition Storage Test) test methods

Thermal Oxidation

  • Bulk Powder (Diffusion Cell) to examine separation in bulk dryers (spray, tray, flash dryers)
  • Basket test series used to estimate thermal limits for very large storage facilities
  • Aerated Cell Test to examine dust in gaseous environments such as fluid bed dryers or rotary drum dryers
  • Air Layer test for dryers with thin layers or deposits or to examine the thermal stability of dust layers in the duct
