Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEO) Analysis

Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEO) Analysis

Nonylphenols and nonylphenol ethoxylates are non-ionic surfactants or detergent-like substances with uses leading to their widespread release into aquatic environments. These are highly toxic to aquatic life. Produced in large quantities, nonylphenols and nonylphenol ethoxylates are used in industrial processes and consumer laundry detergents, personal hygiene, automotive, latex paints and lawn care products.

Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEO) Analysis

Nonylphenol ethoxylates decompose into nonylphenol, one of the worst-known examples of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals in the environment. Widely recognized for their extreme aquatic toxicity to fish and wildlife , nonylphenol ethoxylates and nonylphenols also threaten the health of developing fetuses and young children. Despite being phased out of laundry detergents, nonylphenol ethoxylates are routinely released into the environment due to their widespread use in other consumer products.

Potential health effects of nonylphenol ethoxylates include: hormone (endocrine) disruption, extreme aquatic toxicity, skin and eye irritation, reproductive harm, birth defects, and persistent and bioaccumulative. However, common uses include: house paints, colorants and wood surfaces, clothing and textiles, paint and stain removers, surface and drain cleaners, indoor pesticides, food packaging, shoes and toys.

Nonylphenol ethoxylates are surfactants in some commercial and institutional detergents that increase their effectiveness but also cause problems. Nonylphenols accumulate in the environment and take a long time to decompose.

Nonylphenol and nonylphenol ethoxylates are covered by the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation. The restrictions are based on the need to limit the use of these substances. Nonylphenol ethoxylates are broken down into nonylphenols, which are considered endocrine disruptors.

According to the REACH regulation, nonylphenol and nonylphenol ethoxylates cannot be offered to consumers in the form of substances or mixtures in concentrations equal to or higher than 0,1 percent by weight, for the following purposes:

  • Industrial and institutional cleaning
  • Home cleaning
  • Textile and leather processing
  • agricultural emulsifier
  • metalworking
  • Pulp and paper production
  • Cosmetics
  • Other personal care products
  • Auxiliary formulations in pesticides and biocides.
