Melting Point Tests

The physical properties of a compound, such as melting and boiling point, help identify the sample or determine its purity. The temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid is its melting point. The temperature at which melting occurs depends on the structure of the molecule involved, as it requires overcoming the intermolecular forces that hold the solid together. Therefore, different compounds have different melting points.

Melting Point Tests

A pure, nonionic, crystalline organic compound with an overall sharp and characteristic melting point. Impure, contaminated substances, on the other hand, generally exhibit a wide melting range. A mixture of very small amounts of miscible impurities causes a decrease in the melting point and an increase in the melting point range. Therefore, the melting point of a compound is an important criterion for identification as well as for purity.

The melting point is a characteristic property of solid crystalline substances. It is the temperature at which the solid phase transforms into the liquid phase. The melting point test is the most commonly used thermal analysis method to characterize solid crystal materials. This method is used in research and development as well as in quality control in various industries to identify solid crystalline substances and control their purity.

When the solid crystal material is heated, the particles become more energetic and begin to move more strongly, until eventually the forces of attraction between them are no longer strong enough to hold them together. The crystal structure breaks down and the solid material melts. The stronger the gravitational forces between the particles, the more energy is required to defeat them. The more energy needed, the higher the melting point.

Many other physical properties also change significantly at the melting point. These include thermodynamic values, specific heat capacity, rheological properties such as volume or viscosity. Compared to other physical values, the change in light transmission is easily determined and therefore this property is used for melting point determination.

Our organization also provides melting point testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
