Determination of Light Transmittance / Secchi Disc Depth (EPA 841-B-97-003 Method)

Determination of Light Transmittance / Secchi Disc Depth (EPA 841-B-97-003 Method)

Light transmission and Secchi depth are related to primary productivity in lakes. When sunlight penetrates deeper into the water column, photosynthesis (primary production) can occur deeper in the water column. Light transmission is the amount of sunlight hitting the water surface. A Secchi disc is a black-and-white patterned disc used to measure Secchi depth, that is, the clarity of the water at visibility. The Secchi disc is lowered into the water until it is no longer visible to the observer. The depth at which the disc disappears is defined as the Secchi depth. Secchi depth is a measure of the transparency or overall clarity of the water.

Determination of Light Transmittance / Secchi Disc Depth (EPA 841-B-97-003 Method)

The EPA 841-B-97-003 method, developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is a method for determining light transmittance and Secchi disc depth.

The physical parameters used by the water quality monitoring program of the lakes, carried out by advanced laboratories, include physical parameters such as water temperature, air temperature, wind speed, wave height, dissolved oxygen and barometric pressure, as well as light transmittance and Secchi depth parameters.

In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. These studies are based on the latest technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and modern methods. Among the numerous tests performed in this context, there are also services for determination of light transmittance / semi-circular depth (EPA 841-B-97-003 method).
