The SM 2520 B method, which includes a test method for the determination of salinity, has been developed within the scope of the National Environmental Methods Index (NEMI), which creates a database of environmental methods, protocols, statistical and analytical methods and procedures, and develops standard methods.

Salinity is an important characteristic of industrial and natural waters. Initially , it was considered a measure of the mass of dissolved salts in a given mass of solution. Experimental determination of salt content by drying and weighing presents some difficulties due to the loss of certain components.
The only reliable way to determine the true or absolute salinity of natural water is to perform a complete chemical analysis. However, this method is time consuming and does not provide the necessary precision for correct operation. For this reason, indirect methods are normally used to determine salinity, which involve measuring a physical property such as conductivity, density, sound velocity, or refractive index.
It is possible to calculate salinity based on an experimental relationship between salinity and the physical property determined for a standard solution. The resulting salinity value is no more accurate than the experimental relationship. The precision of the measurement of a physical property determines the precision in salinity.
In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. These studies are based on the latest technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and modern methods. Among the numerous tests performed in this context, there are also salinity determination (SM 2520 B method) services.
