SM 2340 B and C methods, which include test methods for determination of hardness and total hardness, have been developed within the scope of the National Environmental Methods Index (NEMI), which creates a database containing environmental methods, protocols, statistical and analytical methods and procedures, and develops standard methods.

Previously, water hardness was considered a measure of the soap-precipitating capacity of water. Soap is precipitated mainly by the calcium and magnesium ions present. Other polyvalent cations can also precipitate soap, but these are usually in complex forms, coexist with organic compounds, and have little role in water hardness. Therefore, it is not easy to define. In accordance with current practice, total hardness is defined as the sum of the concentrations of calcium and magnesium, both expressed in milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate.
When hardness is numerically greater than the sum of the alkalinities of carbonate and bicarbonate , this equivalent amount of hardness is called carbonate hardness. Hardness exceeding this amount is called non-carbonate hardness.
In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. These studies are based on the latest technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and modern methods. Hardness and total hardness determination (SM 2340 B and C methods) services are among the numerous tests performed in this context.
