When testing a cosmetic or personal care product for shelf life and stability, packaging is a very important factor to consider. A product may have a relatively stable shelf life when tested in glass or other temporary packaging, but the product must demonstrate the same stability in its final packaging. Due to the interactions that will occur between the packaging, the product and the environment, packaging stability testing is carried out in advanced laboratories. The least reactive packaging material is glass. Glass does not react in any way with cosmetic products. However, in advanced laboratories, packaging compatibility tests are carried out both on the final packaging of the product and on the glass, in order to determine whether the reason for the deterioration of the product is due to the formula or whether the packaging has negative effects on the formula.
