Bisphenol A is an industrial chemical compound used in the manufacture of certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. This compound is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastics are generally used in containers where food and beverages are stored, such as water bottles. Epoxy resins are used to coat metal products such as food cans, bottle caps and water supply lines. Some dental sealants and composites also contain this compound.
Some studies have shown that bisphenol A can leach from containers into foodstuffs. Exposure to bisphenol A creates health problems on the brain and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children. It also causes behavioral disorders in children. However, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that Bisphenol A is safe at very low levels.
