In food production areas, migration tests are carried out in all areas that come into contact with food, such as packaging, kitchenware, food processing machines. Different migration test processes are applied for plastic, ceramic or metal packaging materials. If substances that can come into contact with food are detected during the tests, the production phase cannot be started. For this reason, the enterprise should take the necessary precautions and request a new migration test.
Two different migration tests for plastic materials have been accepted by the European Union countries. One of these tests is general migration and the other is specific migration.
The specific migration test is applied to substances that are independent of the specific transit boundary. The toxicological studies made constitute the content of the test. Analytical test methods are used to determine whether the relevant substances pass into food. During the tests, it is checked whether one or more substances in the packaging material pass into the food. To get accurate results, there are processes such as testing time, temperature, and preparing a test site that will represent the worst possible environmental conditions of plastic materials or articles. The test is performed by creating standard test conditions in a suitable environment that includes all these processes.
Permeability in plastic packaging systems is the passage of chemicals into food. This situation should be determined before the food subject to migration reaches the consumer. For this reason, tests must be carried out especially in the production area or on the packaging.
