ISO 16212 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Counting Yeast and Mold

The ISO 16212 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), provides test methods for determining the number of yeast and molds in a cosmetic product by counting colonies on selective agar medium after aerobic incubation.

ISO 16212 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Counting Yeast and Mold

In order to ensure product quality and safety for consumers, it is recommended to first perform an appropriate microbiological risk analysis to identify the types of cosmetic products to which this standard applies. Products with low microbiological risk, such as products with low water activity, hydro-alcoholic products and products with extreme pH values, are subject to the ISO 29621 standard.

There is a wide variety of cosmetic products that fall under this field of application, and these test methods may not be suitable for some products. For example, some cosmetic products do not mix with water. If proven to be equivalent, other methods may be used instead of the test methods described in this standard.

Enumerated yeast can be identified using appropriate identification tests, for example the test methods presented in the standards listed in the standard bibliography. The enumerated mold can be identified, if necessary, by other suitable methods.

The aforementioned standard was published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) in our country with the title of TS EN ISO 16212 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Yeast and mold counting.

In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there are also services for counting yeast and mold in cosmetic products within the framework of the ISO 16212 standard.
