ISO 21149 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Enumeration and Detection of Aerobic Mesophilic Bacteria

ISO 21149 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Enumeration and Detection of Aerobic Mesophilic Bacteria

The ISO 21149 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), offers test methods for the enumeration and detection of aerobic mesophilic bacteria in cosmetic products. These test methods are based on counting colonies on agar medium after aerobic incubation or checking for the absence of bacterial growth after enrichment.

However, cosmetic products are extremely diverse and these test methods may not be suitable in every detail for some products. For example, some cosmetic products do not mix with water. If proven to be equivalent, other methods may be used instead of the test methods described in this standard.

In order to ensure product quality and safety for consumers, an appropriate microbiological risk analysis is recommended for the types of cosmetic products covered by this standard. Products with low microbiological risk, such as products with low water activity, hydro-alcoholic products and products with extreme pH values, are subject to the ISO 29621 standard.

The aforementioned standard was published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) in our country with the title of TS EN ISO 21149 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Aerobic mesophilic bacteria counting and searching.

In the testing, analysis, measurement, and evaluation studies carried out at our organization, national and international standards and current legal regulations are adhered to, and reliable and impartial results are obtained. Among the numerous tests conducted within this scope are the services of counting and detecting aerobic mesophilic bacteria in cosmetic products within the framework of the ISO 21149 standard.
