USA 0031 Aircraft Material Fire Test - Airbus Standard

USA 0031 Airbus fire tests are designed to:

USA 0031 Aircraft Material Fire Test - Airbus Standard

  • To demonstrate that acceptable control of ignition risk has been achieved.
  • To demonstrate that, when exposed to a source of ignition, acceptable control of heat, smoke and toxic fume content and total emissions is achieved for all major use materials and surfaces.
  • To prove that acceptable fire resistance is achieved for all materials and items that are required to act as a barrier to fire or to perform some function when exposed to fire.

The products covered by these tests are:

  • rubber product, rubber seal
  • plastic product
  • life vest
  • fire coating
  • fire adhesive
  • cable and wire
  • Textiles (curtains, carpets)

The US 0031 standard, which is the Airbus standard, mainly includes the following aircraft material fire tests:

  • USA 0031-7.1.2 Vertical flammability test
  • ,US 0031-7.1.3 and US 0031-7.1.4 Horizontal flammability test
  • USA 0031-7.1.5 45 degree flammability test
  • USA 0031-7.3.1 Smoke density test
  • USA 0031-7.4 Smoke toxicity testing
  • USA 0031 Heat dissipation test

As part of the US 0031 Airbus fire resistance requirements, the test requirements for the formation of smoke and toxic gases are determined as follows:

  • Hydrogen fluoride (HF), volume not exceeding 100 ppm
  • Hydrochloric acid (HCL), volume not exceeding 150 ppm
  • Hydrocyanic acid (HCN), volume not exceeding 150 ppm
  • Sulfur dioxide (SO2), volume not exceeding 100 ppm
  • Nitro gases (NO and NO2), volume not exceeding 100 ppm
  • Carbon monoxide (CO), not exceeding 100 ppm volume

The average concentration of the above-mentioned gas components (parts per million, ppm) in the smoke generated during the fire must not exceed the limiting values shown, within the relevant test period, under the required test conditions. This standard evaluates both the toxicity and opacity of smoke simultaneously.

Many standards must be adhered to during the design of an aircraft. Among them, the US 0031 standard evaluates aircraft materials not only for their fire resistance, but also for the toxicity of the gases emitted when burning.

Our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, Under the US 0031 standard, Airbus also provides aircraft material fire testing services.
