A European standard, EN 13036-4, defines a test method for determining the slip/slip resistance of a surface using a device that remains stationary at the test site. The slip resistance is measured by means of a slide mounted at the end of a pendulum arm. This test method gives a measure of the slip/skid resistance properties of a surface in the field or laboratory.
The test method described measures the slip/slip resistance of a small area (approximately 0,01 m2) of a surface. This value should be taken into account when deciding on its applicability to a surface with inhomogeneous surface properties. Surface area is important when deciding applicability to a surface that has inhomogeneous surface properties, for example, with ridges or grooves, or with a rough texture (exceeding 1,2 mm patch test).
Because the results from this test method are from a small area, the results obtained should not be comparable to those from mobile devices that measure skid/skid resistance over a long surface.
For the purposes of this standard, the expression skid / skid resistance is the resistance that limits the relative movement between the contact area of pedestrian shoes or vehicle tires and the surface. There are many factors that determine this resistance, such as tire pressure, contact area, tread pattern of the tire or tread, rubber composition, surface alignment, texture and friction properties, vehicle speed, weather conditions and the presence of surface contamination. Skid / skid resistance is not constant, it varies with climate and traffic and their effect on the properties of the surface material itself.
The pendulum test value refers to the energy loss value as a standard rubber-coated sliding assembly slides across the test surface, providing a standard sliding resistance value . In reality, a series of tests are required in the field to determine the sliding/sliding resistance of an area.
