Developed by the Air Transport Association (ATA) The ATA SPEC 105 standard serves as a guide for the development of a training program for personnel performing non-destructive testing (NDT) tasks. While preparing this standard, other universal education standards were taken as basis. However, this standard describes an approach to developing a curriculum for an airline's non-destructive testing maintenance training program and preparing people to conduct aircraft inspections.
This standard describes the minimum requirements for the training, qualification, inspection and certification of non-destructive testing personnel for the inspection of aircraft, power plants and components. It also includes qualification criteria for personnel who need the necessary knowledge about the technical principles underlying their non-destructive testing. The effectiveness of non-destructive testing practices depends on the skills of those responsible for non-destructive testing.
The ATA SPEC 105 standard applies to one or more of the methods listed as a form of non-destructive testing.
The non-destructive testing methods defined in the mentioned standard are as follows:
A non-destructive testing worker must have adequate training and experience and hold an airframe and power plant license or a mechanic's certificate as required by the certificate holder in order to properly perform the required duties. A NDT worker must be qualified to direct and perform tests in the relevant method. A certified person at any level should be able to install and calibrate equipment, read and interpret indicators, and evaluate them against applicable standards and specifications. He should be fully familiar with the scope and limitations of the method applied and have the ability to apply detailed techniques within the limits of his qualifications.
There are three basic levels for staff qualification: level I, level II and level III.
