The SAE ARP 1185 standard, developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), includes bending test methods for determining and classifying the fatigue strength of reconnectable or permanent hydraulic pipe joints.
This standard is designed to perform bending tests of fittings and joints for hydraulic pipe materials such as AMS 5561 (21Cr-6Ni-9Mn) steel or AMS 4944 (3AL-2.5V) titanium, also developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). During these tests, an average stress is applied to the specimens by holding the system pressure and stretching in a rotary or planar bending test machine.
The SAE ARP 1185 standard is applied for bending tests of high-strength pipes made of various alloys such as corrosion-resistant steel, nimonic, a nickel alloy, titanium and aluminum alloy pipe for use in commercial and military aircraft.
The bending/bending test is also known as the transverse test or the modulus of rupture test. These tests are used to determine the bending strength or how something will react when bent. These tests are performed by supporting the specimen at certain points along its length and applying an axial compressive load at one or more points. Many products are designed to flex, bend and return to their original condition, so these equipment must be tested under repeated flexing to ensure the required performance.
The hydraulic pipe testing and evaluation process is defined by SAE and ISO standards, which include various test procedures including change in corrosion resistance, hose structure integrity, burst and impact testing. Hydraulic pipe manufacturers rely on cold flexibility tests to design and grade their products, adhering to these standards. The sample tube or cap should not crack during testing, and when heated to ambient temperature, the test piece should not crack or leak when subjected to proof pressure.
