RTCA DO-160G Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment

RTCA DO-160G Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment

The DO-160 standard, published by the Radio Technical Aviation Commission (RTCA), is a standard designed for environmental testing of avionics equipment. This standard replaces the previously published DO-138 standard.

RTCA DO-160G Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment

The RTCA DO-160G standard provides standard procedures and environmental testing criteria for testing airborne equipment for the entire range of aircraft, from light general aviation aircraft and helicopters to jumbo jets and supersonic aircraft. The standard in question consists of 26 sections and three appendices. Examples of tests covered include vibration, power input, radio frequency sensitivity, lightning, and electrostatic discharge.

The parts of this standard are as follows:

  • temperature and altitude
  • Temperature change
  • Gender
  • Operational shocks and crash safety
  • Vibration
  • Explosive atmosphere
  • Waterproof
  • Fluid sensitivity sand and dust fungus resistance salt mist
  • magnetic effect
  • power input
  • voltage spikes
  • Audio frequency transmission sensitivity, power inputs
  • Induced signal sensitivity
  • Radio frequency sensitivity (radiated and transmitted)
  • Emission of radio frequency energy
  • Lightning-induced transient sensitivity
  • direct lightning effects
  • iciness
  • Electrostatic discharge
  • Fire and flammability

The purpose of these tests is to provide a controlled means of assuring the performance characteristics of airborne equipment under similar environmental conditions when operating equipment in air. The environmental test conditions and test methods in the standard are used in conjunction with applicable equipment performance standards as a minimum specification under environmental conditions that provide sufficient confidence in performance during use on an aircraft.

Meanwhile, the user guide material of the standard has been changed and replaced by the DO-357 standard with the title: User guide supplement for DO-160G.

The RTCA DO-160G standard is recognized by the International Standards Organization (ISO) as ISO-7137 (ISO 7137 Aircraft equipment - Environmental requirements and test equipment standard). This ISO standard lists different environmental conditions and test procedures for airborne equipment and is primarily intended for civil and transport aircraft applications.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer environmental testing services for airborne equipment under the RTCA DO-160G standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
