Elastomer seals are manufactured to handle a wide variety of demanding hydraulic and pneumatic applications. There are two characteristics that indicate the lasting performance of a gasket: the design of the gasket and its material properties. The SAE ARP 5316 standard has become the leading protocol for determining the shelf life of aerospace elastomeric seals, as well as industrial rubber seals and commercial grade elastomers. In 2018, SAE ARP 5316 was canceled and replaced by the SAE AS 5316 standard for storage of Elastomer gaskets and gasket assemblies. The only difference is that the SAE ARP 5316 standard is a recommendation, while the SAE AS 5316 standard is a standard.
