ATA SPEC 300 Specification for Packing Airline Materials

ATA SPEC 300 Specification for Packing Airline Materials

Developed by the Air Transport Association (ATA), the ATA SPEC 300 standard includes the airline industry's approaches to the design, development and supply of effective packaging for materials sent to an airline company. These approaches also serve as guidelines for shipping containers used in air transport.

ATA SPEC 300 Specification for Packing Airline Materials

The ATA SPEC 300 provides packaging and testing guidelines for repairable and disposable units and components. This standard covers topics such as packaging standards for kits, preparation of dangerous goods for shipment, and packaging and transportation of devices sensitive to electrostatic discharge.

This standard establishes guidelines for the packaging of aircraft parts and materials shipped to an airline and contains minimum requirements to be used in the design, development and purchase of effective packaging. Sufficient flexibility is included in these guidelines to allow for desirable technological advances in the packaging field.

The ATA SPEC 300 is designed in sections to provide packaging instructions as follows:

  • Part 1 sets the standards that apply to the packaging of all parts and consumables.
  • Chapters 2 and 3 contain additional requirements for repairable and consumable items.
  • Chapter 4 provides packaging standards for kits.
  • Chapter 5 provides regulatory references and guidance for the transport of dangerous goods.
  • Chapter 6 contains standards for the packaging and transportation of devices sensitive to electrostatic discharge.
  • Chapters 7 and 8 contain requirements for Category I, II and III containers.

The primary purpose of this standard is to promote the development and standardization of commercial airline packaging that will:

  • Providing adequate protection with minimum tare weight and cube consistent with optimum packaging versatility
  • Ensuring that materials and containers are properly identified
  • Eliminate shipping damage due to packaging
  • Reducing packaging and unpacking costs
  • Promoting environmentally friendly packaging

Founded in 1936 by 14 airlines, ATA's aim is to support its members by promoting the air transport sector. To this end, it works to standardize safety, costs, technological developments, official relations, industry regulations, and airline practices.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services related to airline packaging materials under the ATA SPEC 300 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
