In the "TS 8336 TS 8336 Soils - Organic Matter Determination" standard published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), the Walkley-Black method used in the determination of the organic matter of the soil is explained.

The Walkley-Black test method is intended to measure the amount of oxidizable organic matter in which organic matter is oxidized with a known amount of chromate in the presence of sulfuric acid. The remaining chromate is detected spectrophotometrically at 600 nm. The organic carbon calculation is based on organic matter containing 58 percent carbon. The method has a detection limit of about 0.10 percent and is repeatable on homogeneous sample material, usually within 8 percent.
Samples with concentrations above 15 percent organic matter have the best ignition loss.
Soil carbon affects almost all soil properties, so it is the most important component in soil. As soil organic matter, carbon changes the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil. Soil organic matter refers to fully decomposed, partially decomposed and undecomposed organic matter of plant and animal origin.
Soil organic matter is the primary indicator of soil quality. Improvements in soil organic matter lead to increased plant growth by creating a more favorable soil environment.
In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. These studies are based on the latest technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and modern methods. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there are also services for the determination of organic matter in sewage sludge (TS 8336).
