Determination of Ignition Loss of Dry Mass in Sewage Sludge

Determination of Ignition Loss of Dry Mass in Sewage Sludge

EN 15169, a European standard, defines a test method for determining the loss on ignition for all types of waste, sludge, and sediment. The full name of this standard is: EN 15169 Waste characterization - Determination of loss on ignition in waste, sludge, and sediment.

Determination of Ignition Loss of Dry Mass in Sewage Sludge

Loss on ignition is generally used as an estimate of the non-volatile organic matter content in waste, sludge, and sediments. The evaporation of any elemental carbon content and organic matter, or their chemical reactions with inorganic compounds, results in loss on ignition. The weight change that causes a portion of the contents of a sewage sludge sample to burn or evaporate after being heated at a high temperature is defined as loss on ignition (LOI).

Another European standard, EN 12879, defines a test method for determining the loss of dry mass of sewage sludge when ignited at 550 degrees. The full name of this standard is: EN 12879 Characterization of sludges - Determination of loss by ignition of dry mass.

During this test, inorganic substances or their degradation products, such as water, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and oxygen are released or absorbed, and some inorganic substances are volatile under the reaction conditions.

Generally, these standards are complied with when determining the heating loss of the dry mass in the treatment sludge. Briefly, the percent weight lost during ignition gives a rough measure of the organic content of the residue. In general, percent loss in ignition values shows an inverse relationship with percent dry weight values. Glow loss is the process of measuring the weight change after a sample has been heated at high temperature which causes some of its content to burn or volatilize. The weight change of the sample is monitored during the heating process. This measurement is necessary to determine the organic matter content of the sample in materials such as sediment, sludge, soil and waste. Generally, inorganic materials such as cement, lime, calcined bauxite and refractories are also tested by loss of ignition.

Our company, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides services for the determination of the glow loss of dry mass in treatment sludge with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
