Determination of Mass Concentration of Each Gaseous Organic Compound

Determination of Mass Concentration of Each Gaseous Organic Compound

The EN 13649 standard, a European standard, describes procedures for the preparation and analysis of samples of volatile organic compounds, such as sampling from activated carbon, those resulting from processes using solvents. The full name of this standard is: EN 13649 Fixed source emissions - Determination of mass concentration of individual gaseous organic compounds - Activated carbon and solvent desorption method.

Determination of Mass Concentration of Each Gaseous Organic Compound

Results obtained in compliance with the EN 13649 standard are expressed in mg/m3 of the mass concentration of individual gaseous organic compounds. This standard is suitable for use in the range of approximately 0,5 mg/m3 to 2000 mg/m3.

For the purposes of the EN 13649 standard, flue gas is the gaseous waste product from the process using a solvent. Dilution gas is the gas used to dilute the sampled flue gas to prevent water condensation. Desorption efficiency is the ratio of the mass of organic material recovered, expressed as a percentage, to the mass of organic material added to the carbon adsorbent. The detection limit is the minimum concentration of a substance that produces an observable response.

This standard complies with Directive 1999/13/EEC on the limitation of emissions of volatile organic compounds from the use of organic solvents in certain activities and facilities, published in European Union countries.

Generally, there are three stages in the measurement of individual gaseous organic compounds : flue gas sampling, processing of the sampled material, and chemical analysis using gas chromatography.

Sampling principles in flue gas sampling are as follows:

  • Organic components in a measured volume of gas must be adsorbable on activated carbon.
  • Particulate matter that interferes with the measurement must be removed.
  • Water condensation should be avoided.

The collected organic material is desorbed using an extraction solvent.

A portion of the sample is injected into a gas chromatography system equipped with a capillary column and a suitable detector. The components are separated by gas chromatography.

During the sample preparation step, a known amount of reference material is applied onto an empty carbon tube to determine the component desorption efficiency. The desorption efficiency should be better than 80 percent.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides services for the determination of the mass concentration of each organic compound in the gaseous state, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
