ISO 16890-1 Air Filters for General Ventilation - Part 1: Technical Specifications, Requirements and Classification System Based on Particulate Matter Efficiency (ePM)

ISO 16890-1 Air Filters for General Ventilation - Part 1: Technical Specifications, Requirements and Classification System Based on Particulate Matter Efficiency (ePM)

The ISO 16890-1 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), defines an efficiency classification system for particulate matter-based general ventilation air filters and provides an overview of test methods. It also describes the general requirements for evaluating and marking filters and documenting test results.

ISO 16890-1 Air Filters for General Ventilation - Part 1: Technical Specifications, Requirements and Classification System Based on Particulate Matter Efficiency (ePM)

Essentially, the ISO 16890 standard consists of the following sections under the main heading "Air filters for general ventilation":

  • EN ISO 16890-1 Part 1: technical specifications, requirements and classification system based on particulate matter efficiency (ePM)
  • EN ISO 16890-2 Part 2: Measurement of fractional efficiency and air flow resistance
  • EN ISO 16890-3 Part 3: Determination of gravimetric efficiency and airflow resistance versus mass of captured test powder
  • EN ISO 16890-4 Part 4: Conditioning method for determining minimum fractional test efficiency

The ISO 16890-1 standard is intended to be used in conjunction with other parts.

The test method described in that standard is valid for a test rig with air flow rates between 0,25 m3/s and 1,5 m3/s and a nominal face area of 610 mm × 610 mm.

It refers to particulate air filter elements for general ventilation with a particulate matter efficiency of 99 percent when tested according to the methods defined in other parts of the standard. Air filter elements with a higher initial efficiency are evaluated by other applicable test methods (eg ISO 29463 standard).

Filter elements used in portable room air purifiers are not covered by this standard.

Performance results obtained in accordance with the ISO 16890 standard are not applied quantitatively alone to predict performance in service in terms of efficiency and life. Other factors affecting performance that need to be taken into account are included in the standard annex (Annex A).

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, technical specifications and requirements based on air particulate matter efficiency (ePM) for general ventilation within the scope of ISO 16890-1 standard. It also provides testing services for the classification system.
