Puncture Resistance Test

Puncture resistance testing is generally performed to determine the ability of a sample, such as film, rubber, or paper, to withstand tearing by a probe when force is applied at a constant velocity. In most cases, a specially designed test apparatus is used to properly fix the sample for testing. The design of the test probe varies from standard to standard. A common testing procedure in the medical field is a puncture test to determine the sharpness of a needle, syringe, or other probe. Advanced laboratories today have a wide variety of equipment, including puncture testing apparatus and probes, to enable accurate and repeatable puncture resistance testing.

For example, the test method described in the ASTM D6241 standard is used to determine the puncture resistance of geotextiles and similar products. This test method is very similar to the test method defined in the ASTM D4833 standard. Here, a test specimen is secured to a ring clamp and a force is applied to the center of the material by a steel bar until rupture occurs.
