Environmental Simulation Tests

Salt Fog Tests

Salt spray testing, or salt fog testing, is a corrosion test method that uses high salt environments to measure the resistance of products, paints and coatings to corrosion over long periods of time. This test is conducted as a salt spray test in a closed chamber set up to create various corrosive environments. During testing, samples are exposed to a specific salt concentration for a predetermined period of time according to the product specification, product type, or industry standards.

Salt Fog Tests

A typical salt spray test uses a standardized 5 percent sodium chloride solution to create a highly corrosive atmosphere. If the project requires other requirements, environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity are also often adjusted to simulate certain climates or operating conditions.

In general, samples are checked at regular intervals to monitor corrosion levels and record stages such as white and red rust development or coating deterioration. Laboratory experts assist companies in determining the most appropriate test method for multiple coating types, including electroplated copper-nickel-chromium, electroplated copper-nickel, and anodized aluminum. Salt spray tests are performed in advanced laboratories for various products and applications. When routine tests are not deemed sufficient, alternative salt spray test methods are applied to cover various conditions. For example, neutral salt spray, acetic acid salt spray, copper accelerated acetic acid salt spray, calcium chloride test, synthetic seawater test, hydrogen induced cracking test and special cyclic corrosion test.

In short, the salt fog test is a laboratory simulation of a corrosive salty environment. It is used as an accelerated tool to determine the ability of surface coatings to resist atmospheric corrosion. It is one of the oldest testing methods. This test method has proven effective in determining the integrity and quality of abrasive resistance of various metals or finishes.

In addition to the salt spray test, the following tests are also commonly performed:

  • Identifying corrosion leakage when a coated surface is scratched
  • Measuring coating adhesion
  • Measuring the degree of swelling
  • Determining the degree of corrosion

Our organization also provides salt fog testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
