The edge crush test is a laboratory test method used to measure the cross-sectional crushing of corrugated cardboard. This test method is applied to determine the ability of a sheet of corrugated cardboard to resist crushing forces. Edge crush testing is performed to determine the corrugated board's ability to provide security to goods in transit. Performing the edge crush test is essential for shipping in corrugated boxes and packaging as it allows to realize the quality of this raw material and improve whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of the load.

When performing the edge crush test, a section load is applied to the corrugated board until it collapses. In this way, the maximum compression force that the material can withstand without deterioration is calculated.
Edge crush testing for corrugated boxes reveals the overall resistance of a material. Using this data and considering the protective properties of the material, it's possible to manufacture boxes, packages, and other products. Since the corners and edges of boxes are responsible for carrying most of the load, this test determines the resistance of the edges to crushing. Therefore, performing this test means knowing the strength of the factor that contributes most to a box's resistance.
Today, this test method, which is directly related to stacking resistance, is increasingly applied to test the resistance of corrugated cardboard. Edge crush testing is a test method suitable for today's transportation system, in which cases are stacked on pallets.
The edge crush testing machine used in the tests calculates the compression resistance at the edge of the corrugated cardboard. These values are always minimal and variable, as different processes are used to produce the same type of corrugated board.
There are numerous international standards whose requirements include an edge crush test. The most common of these is the following ISO standard: ISO 3037 Corrugated board - Determination of edge crush resistance (waxless edge method). This standard defines a paraffin-free test method for edges and applies to all types of corrugated board. The purpose of this standard is to determine the crush resistance of the corrugated cardboard edge.
Our organization also provides edge crush testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
