IEC 60068-2-78 Environmental Tests - Part 2-78: Tests - Test Cabinet: Humid Heat, Steady State

The IEC 60068-2-78 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defines a test method for determining the suitability of electrotechnical products, components or equipment for transport, storage and use in high humidity conditions. The main purpose of this test method is to allow observation of the effect of high humidity at constant temperature without condensation on the sample for a predetermined time.

IEC 60068-2-78 Environmental Tests - Part 2-78: Tests - Test Cabinet: Humid Heat, Steady State

This test method provides a range of preferred severity of high temperature, high humidity and test duration. The test is applicable to both heat-emitting and non-heat-emitting samples. At the same time, this test method is applicable to small equipment or components as well as large equipment with complex interconnections with test equipment outside the chamber, which require a set-up time that prevents the use of preheating and maintaining specified conditions throughout the set-up period.

In advanced laboratories, the test room and measurement system are prepared as follows:

  • Detection devices are placed in the work area to monitor temperature and humidity. Devices for testing heat-dissipating samples are located in the locations defined in the IEC 60068-1 standard.
  • The temperature and relative humidity in the working environment are kept within the prescribed values and tolerances, taking into account the effect of the tested sample on the room conditions. The temperature tolerances in the standard take into account absolute errors in measurements and slow temperature changes.
  • Condensed water is continuously drained from the chamber and is not used again until it is purified again.
  • Condensed water must not fall on the samples from the walls and roof of the test chamber.
  • The resistivity of the water used to maintain the room humidity should not be less than certain values.
  • The tested sample should not be exposed to heat emitted from room conditioning devices.
  • In injection type chambers, moisture should be injected into the sample from afar and without hitting the sample directly.

Test intensity is defined by a combination of temperature, relative humidity, and total test duration. Unless otherwise specified in the relevant specification, temperature and relative humidity intensity can be selected from the table in the standard.
