In the IEC 60068-2-75 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), three test methods are defined for determining the impact resistance of a test object against impacts of different severity levels. These test methods serve to determine the mechanical strength of a product and are primarily intended for electrical equipment.

The test methods developed within the scope of this standard include a defined number of blows on the test object and in the prescribed directions with a defined impact energy. Impacts cover impact energies ranging from 0,14 joules to 50 joules.
The standardized and coordinated test methods described in the IEC 60068-2-75 standard are used to demonstrate an acceptable level of robustness, especially when assessing the safety of a product.
In the last update of this standard, some values in Tables 1 and 2 are no longer recommended, but have been retained as alternatives for historical consistency.
The test methods defined in the mentioned standard are as follows:
In the IEC 60068-2-75 standard, the impact elements are precisely defined to ensure full repeatability and comparability. The standard describes exactly what material to use, what the shape of the impact elements should look like, and the weight of each test element.
Impact tests are of great scientific and practical importance. A collision between two materials or objects can often damage one or both. The damage may be in the form of a crack or break. Therefore, engineers need to know how materials and products behave under impact and the magnitude of the forces they can withstand.
The ultimate goal of impact testing is to provide accurate analysis of the sample's weak links. The inference from this data is then used to strengthen the material, thus making it more impact resistant, robust and safe. Making products more durable and safe increases brand reliability.
