MIL-DTL-901E Shock Tests, HI (High Impact) Ship Machinery, Equipment and Systems, Requirements

The MIL-DTL-901E standard, developed by the U.S. Department of Defense , describes high-impact (HI) shock testing requirements for machinery, equipment, systems, and structures on surface vessels, including carriers and submarines, unless otherwise specified. The purpose of these requirements is to verify the ability of onboard installations to withstand shock loads caused by the effects of nuclear or conventional weapons or environmental mechanical shocks during operation.

MIL-DTL-901E Shock Tests, HI (High Impact) Ship Machinery, Equipment and Systems, Requirements

Within the scope of this standard, standard shock test methods are grouped as follows:

  • The light shock test is a test performed on a light shock machine. Test machine weight should be less than 270 kg.
  • The medium-weight shock test is a test performed on a medium-weight shock machine. Test machine weight should be less than 3.550 kg.
  • A high-weight shock test is a test performed on a standard floating shock platform, extended floating shock platform, medium floating shock platform, or large floating shock platform.
  • The medium-weight deck simulation shock test is a test performed on class II deck-mounted equipment on a deck-simulated shock machine and class I/II and class III deck-mounted equipment, if applicable.

Shock degrees were determined as follows:

  • Grade A is the level required for the ship's safety and sustained combat capability.
  • Grade B, personnel whose operations are not essential to the safety and combat capability of the ship, but who operate or maintain Class A equipment, including personnel at battle stations, Grade A, or the ship as a whole as a result of shock exposure.

The equipment types are determined as follows:

  • main unit
  • side component
  • partial assembly

Equipment classes are determined as follows:

  • Class I. This equipment must meet these shock requirements without the use of isolating devices (shock, noise or vibration wedges or resilient members) installed between the equipment and the ship structure or ship foundation.
  • Class II. This equipment must meet these shock requirements by using isolating devices installed between the equipment and the ship structure or ship foundation.
  • Class I/II. This equipment is required to have some part or parts that must meet these shock requirements and some other part or parts that must meet these shock requirements without the use of isolation devices installed between the equipment and the ship structure or ship foundation.
  • Class III. This equipment has application on board with or without isolation devices installed between the equipment and the ship structure or ship foundation and therefore must meet these requirements with or without the isolation device.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the scope of MIL-DTL-901E standard, shock tests, HI (high impact) ship machinery, equipment and systems, it also provides testing services for its requirements.
