The SAE J2883 standard, developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), describes a test method for measuring the random incoming sound absorption performance and distortion rates of a material or part in a small-sized echo chamber. Absorption performance may include the sound absorption coefficient of the test sample or the amount of energy absorbed by the test sample.

Materials for absorption processes may include homogeneous materials, inhomogeneous materials, or a combination of homogeneous, inhomogeneous and inelastic impermeable materials. These materials are commonly installed in mobility products and transportation systems such as land vehicles, marine products, aircraft and commercial industrial products to reduce reverberant sound generation, minimize reflections from hard surfaces and thereby reduce ambient noise levels.
The test method described was developed for measurements in rooms between 6 m3 and 25 m3 in volume. For most materials and systems, the absorption performance varies as a function of frequency. In this respect, this test method includes principles for measuring absorption in a frequency range that has been found to be applicable to many transportation systems.
Combining the size of the sample and the frequency range of interest for automotive applications, this test method is designed to make measurements using a small echo chamber where the frequency range will be as low as 250 Hz to 8000 Hz.
The test method described here differs from the test methods described in the ASTM C423 and ISO 354 standards. Because this standard uses an echo chamber of a significantly smaller size than the chamber of the size recommended in the said international standards. This not only assists in testing a small sample, but also allows testing of a typical component or subsystem of a vehicle and other transportation systems. However, the proposed test method is not intended to replace the test methods in ASTM C423 or ISO 354 standards.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides laboratory measurement services of random sound absorption tests using a small echo chamber, within the scope of SAE J2883 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
