The EN IEC 60601-2-52 standard, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), an organization affiliated with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes the specifications and test methods for the safety and performance of hospital beds. This standard has also been published in Turkey by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) under the title: TS EN 60601-2-52 Electrical medical equipment - Part 2-52: Specific requirements for the basic safety and necessary performance of hospital beds.
This standard applies to the basic safety and basic performance of medical mattresses for adult use. However, this standard does not cover the dangers inherent in the intended physiological function of the medical equipment covered.
Patient beds allow patients to change and adjust their bedding to better position their head and feet. These changes allow movement as well as periodic changes in pressure points in the body, thereby improving the blood circulation of the patient while in bed.
Hospital beds offer numerous advantages over normal beds. Comfort should be at the highest level for patients who use it for a long time. In addition, its customizable features make it easy to adjust certain parts of the bed. The main advantages offered by hospital beds are: better positioning for patients, improved circulation, safety, easy transfer and caregiver assistance.
The first published international bed standard for electrically operated hospital beds is the IEC 60601-2-38 standard. Later, the EN 1970 European standard was published, focusing on adjustable beds for the disabled. The IEC 60601-2-52 standard has been approved by members of the IEC and ISO, and covers home care, nursing home and hospital beds. This standard provides the basic performance of all medical beds to ensure patient safety.
