The ISO 5364 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes the basic safety and performance characteristics and test methods of oropharyngeal tubes, which are anesthesia and respiratory equipment. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 5364 Anesthesia and respiratory equipment - Oropharyngeal tubes.

This standard describes the requirements for plastic materials or rubber for the oropharyngeal airways, including reinforcing inserts made of plastic materials or metal. Oropharyngeal tubes are effective medical equipment for people who are unconscious and have obstructed airways. The curved and hollow oropharyngeal tube is a plastic device placed on the tongue. Since it is curved, the tip of the device is placed behind the tongue base and lifts the device forward. This prevents clogging.
The ISO 5364 standard does not contain requirements for metal oropharyngeal airways or the flammability of oropharyngeal airways. Flammability of the oropharyngeal airways is a hazard, for example when flammable anesthetics, electrosurgical units or lasers are used. This standard does not cover supralaryngeal airways without an internal, integrated sealing system.
Airway size is an important criterion when selecting the appropriate device (oropharyngeal airway) to prevent airway obstruction by soft tissues and to keep the base of the tongue forward . Airway size is indicated by a readable mark and a color code, which is important for quick identification and selection in emergencies.
The standards referred to as normative in the implementation of this standard are: ISO 7000, ISO 10993-1, ISO 11607-1, ISO 15223-1, EN 556-1 and EN 1041.
Our organization also provides basic safety and performance testing services for oropharyngeal tubes, which are ISO 5364 anesthesia and respiratory equipment, within the scope of laboratory services.
