In the TSE K 292 standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the properties and test methods of medical oxygen gas are explained. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TSE K 292 Medical oxygen gas.
The said standard covers the definition, properties, sampling and test methods of medical oxygen gas, which is defined as 99,5 percent oxygen and 93 percent oxygen, to the market. This standard does not cover the pressure vessels used to store medical oxygen gas and their safety aspects. This standard also does not cover gas produced using individual concentrators for home use.
The oxygen content in the inhaled air, that is, in the surrounding natural air, is only 21 percent. The remainder is a mixture of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and other gases. In order to obtain pure oxygen, gaseous air is collected and cooled to liquefy, and special methods are used to separate the oxygen from the air. The collected oxygen is then tested and grouped into different classes. The purity of oxygen determines the oxygen classes. There are four major classes of oxygen in the industry: welding, research, aviation and medical. Medical oxygen is used for oxygen therapy in hospitals and healthcare institutions. It has been identified as a drug and therefore standards have been set for compressed medical gas. One of the medical oxygen gas criteria is that oxygen-containing cylinders should always be completely emptied to minimize the risk of contamination.
