EN 14078 Liquid Petroleum Products - Determination of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) Content in Medium Distillates - Infrared Spectrometry Method

A European standard, EN 14078, defines a test method applied to the fatty acid methyl ester content of the following measuring ranges for the determination of the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content in diesel fuel or domestic heating fuel by infrared spectrometry:

EN 14078 Liquid Petroleum Products - Determination of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) Content in Medium Distillates - Infrared Spectrometry Method

  • A range: approximately 0,05 to 3 percent by volume
  • B range: approximately 3 percent to 20 percent by volume
  • C range: approximately 20 to 50 percent by volume

In principle, higher fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) contents can also be analyzed when diluted, but no precision data are currently available for results outside the specified range.

This test method has been verified to be applicable to samples containing fatty acid methyl esters conforming to EN 14214 or EN 14213 standards. Reliable quantitative results are obtained only if the samples do not contain significant amounts of other interfering components, such as esters and other carbonyl compounds, which have absorption bands in the spectral region used for the quantification of the fatty acid methyl ester. If such interfering components are present, this test method is expected to produce higher values.

The use of this standard involves hazardous substances, processes, and equipment. Therefore, this standard does not claim to address all safety issues related to its use. Consequently, it is the responsibility of employees using this standard to take appropriate measures to protect their safety and health before implementing the standard, and to fulfill all necessary legal and regulatory requirements.

Infrared spectroscopy device is a spectroscopy device that deals with the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, that is, light with a longer wavelength and lower frequency than visible light, and is used to identify and study chemicals, as in all spectroscopic techniques.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services for the determination of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content in medium distillates of liquid petroleum products (infrared spectrometry method) within the scope of the EN 14078 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
