Sealing Qualification Tests

Sealing Qualification Tests

In advanced laboratories, leak tests are conducted under conditions close to those found in practice, particularly to determine the sealing behavior of gasket materials. A different test method is needed to determine the uniformity of sealing behavior in order to identify leakage failure in equipment or material that should exhibit sealing. Detection of leakage in its early stages and subsequent precise determination of the leakage rate is achieved through conductivity measurements. The effectiveness of a gasket depends on its sealing in the gasket state and its adhesion in the compression state. Gaskets are fitted to equipment used in a wide variety of industries, including chemicals, water supply, paper manufacturing, food processing, and many other applications.

Sealing Qualification Tests

In general, the following points are emphasized in the leak tests:

  • Component size and internal volume
  • leak limit
  • Hidden interior volumes affecting leak measurements
  • Parts are clean and dry
  • Whether there is access to the content
  • Whether it is a closed unit
  • Whether it is rigid or flexible
  • Whether the parts are at ambient temperature
  • Surface quality of sealed surfaces

There are many different types of gaskets used to provide sealing, each with different functions. Compression gaskets, diaphragm gaskets, ferrofluid gaskets, flange gaskets, mechanical seals, Dowty gaskets (integrated gaskets), Bridgman gaskets (piston sealing mechanism), hydrostatic gaskets, hydrodynamic gaskets, inflatable gaskets, radial shaft gaskets, wiper gaskets, dry gas gaskets, and Bodok gaskets (a special gas sealing gasket for medical applications) are some of the commonly used gasket types.

However, other than gaskets, there are other systems that provide sealing. For example, induction seal or lid sealant, adhesive sealant, O-ring, heat seal, hose couplings, hermetic seal and container lid.

The purpose of sealing qualification tests is to determine the effectiveness of sealing components from their internal volumes, ie the insulating strength of internal volumes. Sealing failures either allow the ingress of contaminants, reducing the effective life and reliability of the equipment, or cause the stored liquid or gaseous content to flow out of the container.

Our organization also provides impermeability qualification testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
