EN ISO 23125 Machine Tools - Safety - Lathes

The standard “EN ISO 23125 Machine tools - Safety - Lathes”, which is essentially a European standard and published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes the requirements and measures to be taken to eliminate hazards or reduce risks in the following groups of lathes and turning centers designed primarily for metal cutting and shaping:

EN ISO 23125 Machine Tools - Safety - Lathes

  • Group 1: Manually controlled lathes without numerical control
  • Group 2: Manually controlled lathes with limited numerical control capability
  • Group 3: Numerically controlled lathes and turning centers
  • Group 4: Single or multi-spindle automatic lathes

Detailed information on machine groups is included in the mandatory and optional operating modes in the definitions section of this standard. The requirements in this international standard are generally applicable to all lathe machine groups. If the requirements are applicable only to some specific lathe machine groups, then the specific lathe machine groups are specified. Hazards from other metalworking processes (e.g. grinding and laser machining) are covered by other international standards.

This standard covers the significant hazards listed and applies to auxiliary devices integrated into the machine, such as workpieces, tools and work clamping devices, transport devices and chip handling equipment. It also applies to machines integrated into an automated production line or turning cell, as the hazards and risks involved are similar to those of stand-alone machines.

This standard also includes a minimum list of safety-related information that the manufacturer must provide to the user. In addition, the ISO 12100 standard applies in this regard, which shows the interaction of the manufacturer's and the user's responsibilities regarding operational safety.

The user's responsibility to detect certain hazards, such as fire and explosion, and to mitigate associated risks may be critical (e.g. whether the central extraction system is functioning correctly).

In the case of grinding, milling and some similar operations, this standard can be taken as a basis for safety requirements.

For the purposes of this standard, in addition to the terms and definitions given in ISO 12100, ISO 13849-1 and EN 954-1, the following definitions apply:

  • A lathe is a machine tool in which the main motion is the rotation of the workpiece against fixed cutting tools.
  • Manual control is the operating mode in which each movement of the machine is initiated and controlled individually by the operator.
  • A manually controlled lathe is a lathe in which the processing steps for machining are controlled or initiated by an operator without being supported by a machining program.
  • Numerical control, computer numerical control, is the automatic control of a process performed by a device using numerical data introduced while the process is in progress.
  • A numerical control lathe is a lathe that operates under numerical control or computer numerical control.
  • A turning center is a numerically controlled lathe equipped with power tools and the ability to orient the workholding spindle about its axis. A turning center may also include, but is not limited to, functions such as measuring, polishing, threading, drilling, milling, grinding, and boring.
  • The work area refers to the area where metal cutting will be done.
  • Performance level is the discrete level used to indicate the ability of safety-related parts of control systems to perform a safety function under foreseeable conditions.
  • The category is obtained by classifying the safety-related parts of a control system in terms of their resistance to failure and their behavior under failure, and by the structural arrangement of the parts or their reliability.
