EN IEC 60831-1 Shunt Power Capacitors of Self-Healing Type for AC Systems with Nominal Voltage Up to and Including 1000 Volts - Part 1: General - Performance, Testing and Rating - Safety Requirements - Installation and Operating Guide
The standard "EN IEC 60831-1 Shunt power capacitors of the self-healing type for AC systems with nominal voltages up to and including 1000 1 Volts - Part 1000: General - Performance, testing and ratings - Safety requirements - Installation and operating guide", which has its basis in a European standard and was subsequently published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), applies to both capacitor units and capacitor banks intended for use for power factor correction of AC power systems with nominal voltages up to and including 15 60 Volts and frequencies from XNUMX Hz to XNUMX Hz. This standard also applies to capacitors intended for use in power filter circuits. Additional definitions, requirements and tests for power filter capacitors are included in the annex of the standard (Annex A).

The following types of capacitors are excluded from the scope of this standard:
- Shunt power capacitors of the non-self-healing type for AC systems with a nominal voltage up to and including 1 000 Volts (these capacitors fall within the scope of the standards IEC 60931-2 and IEC 60931-3).
- Shunt capacitors for AC power systems with a nominal voltage above 1 000 Volts (these capacitors are covered by the standards IEC 60871-1, IEC 60871-2, IEC 60871-3 and IEC 60871-4).
- Capacitors for inductive heat generating plants operating at frequencies between 40 Hz and 24.000 Hz (these capacitors are covered by the IEC 60110-1 and IEC 60110-2 standards).
- Series capacitors (these capacitors are within the scope of IEC 60143-1, IEC 60143-2, IEC 60143-3 and IEC 60143-4 standards).
- AC motor capacitors (these capacitors are covered by IEC 60252-1 and IEC 60252-2 standards).
- Coupling capacitors and capacitor dividers (these capacitors are covered by the IEC 60358-1 standard).
- Capacitors for power electronic circuits (these capacitors are covered by the IEC 61071 standard).
- Small AC capacitors to be used for fluorescent and discharge lamps (these capacitors are covered by the IEC 61048 and IEC 61049 standards).
- Capacitors to suppress radio interference.
- Capacitors are designed for use in various types of electrical equipment and are therefore considered components.
- Capacitors designed for use where DC voltage is superimposed on AC voltage.
Accessories such as insulators, switches, instrument transformers, fuses, etc. must comply with the relevant IEC standards. These are not covered by the IEC 60831-1 standard.
The main objectives of the IEC 60831-1 standard are:
- Formulate uniform rules regarding performances, tests and ratings
- Formulate specific safety rules
- Providing a guide for installation and operation
This standard specifies requirements for capacitors designed for use under the following conditions:
- Residual voltage at power-up: Should not exceed 10 percent of rated voltage)
- Altitude: Should not exceed 2.000 m
- Ambient air temperature categories: Capacitors are classified according to temperature categories, each category being indicated by a number followed by a letter. The number represents the lowest ambient air temperature at which the capacitor can operate. The letters represent the upper limits of the temperature ranges with the maximum values specified in the table. The temperature categories cover the temperature range from minus 50 degrees to plus 55 degrees. The lowest ambient air temperature at which the capacitor can operate shall be selected from five preferred values of plus 5, minus 5, minus 25, minus 40 and minus 50 degrees. For indoor use, a lower limit of minus 5 degrees is normally applicable.
